Dear parents/carers,
The last half of Term 4 is always a challenging time for schools to maintain engagement with Y10 students. There are a number of very important initiatives occurring in Term 4 that are designed to keep Y10 engaged, prepare them for the jump into the senior school, address a number of school readiness and compliance requirements and continue to make school meaningful and enjoyable.
HSC Minimum Standards
All high school students are expected to meet minimum standards in literacy and numeracy prior to completing their schooling (HSC). Students need to achieve a level 3 or 4 in short online reading, writing and numeracy tests. (Tests that examine skills for everyday life). More information is found on the link below.
https://www.educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard
Many students in Y0 have already achieved these standards, however, students who are yet to obtain their minimum standard will be supported by our Academic Enrichment Team and provided further opportunities in demonstrating the standards. Our goal is to develop the core literacy and numeracy skills of our Y10 students to ensure that all students achieve the HSC Minimum Standards before they start Y12.
NESA Online Student Accounts
All students will be guided through the process of creating their NESA Student Login. This will be the only way for students to access their achievements, grades and marks from their Y10 ROSA through to their HSC. Students will also be able to access their results from the HSC Minimum Standards. Mr Mallon and Mr Ward will organise this process later in the term.
Work Experience Opportunities
Students can participate in Work Experience in Term 4. A maximum of 2 weeks can be supported for students to gain experience and understanding of various industries. For students to be covered by insurance, a Work Experience form will need to be completed. The form will need to be completed by the student, the host employer and finally signed off by Mr Mallon. This will be recorded as ‘School Business’ on the student’s attendance record.
It is important to note, Erina High School is unable to organise any Work Experience, this must be the initiative of the student. This opportunity is available for all Y10 students who can organise and negotiate with a host employer. Work Experience application forms can be collected from the front office, Ms Pursehouse or Mr Mallon.
All My Own Work
Y10 students will be completing the ‘HSC All My Own Work Program’ during timetabled career
All My Own Work is a program designed to help HSC students follow the principles and practices of good scholarship. This includes understanding, valuing and using ethical practices when locating and using information as part of their HSC studies. Students who have completed the program will also know about penalties for cheating and how to avoid malpractice when preparing their work for assessment. To be eligible for the HSC, students must complete HSC: All My Own Work (or its equivalent) before they submit any work for Preliminary (Year 11) or HSC (Year 12) courses.
Y11 Readiness Lessons
To develop some familiarity with the content areas chosen for study in Y11, students may have some adjustments to their classes. The aim of this strategy is to develop greater understanding on the content areas selected for study in Y11. As a result of this, some students will have timetable adjustments to timetabled lessons. This will be implemented in Mathematics, English and Science lessons.
